Information for mothers about career coaching and research study

A mother and a coach sit at a table talking, while a child plays with building blocks beside them.

Hi, mother!

This invitation is sent to you, because you currently receive home care allowance, meaning that you are taking care of your children at home.

Do you have a job or a student place where you can return to after your parental leave? Would you like help in finding one?

Come participate in career coaching!

During the coaching, we will help you apply for a job or a student place after your parental leave.

We draw lots for the mothers who get to participate in the coaching.

The coaching is for mothers who

  • have taken care of their child on Kela’s child home care allowance for a minimum of six months and
  • have neither a job nor a student place.

If you have a full-time employment contract or a student place, you cannot participate in the coaching.

The coaching is part of a research study. The name of the study is Mothers’ Career Coaching Experiment (Äitien uravalmennuskokeilu). The research is conducted by Kela and The Labour Institute for Economic Research LABORE.

Through the study, we look into how mothers return to work or continue studying after their parental leave.

Read more about the study at the end of this letter.

The coaching and research are voluntary, meaning that you do not have to participate in them.

If you do not want to participate, it does not affect allowances paid by Kela or the services you use.

What is the coaching about?

In this coaching, we help you apply for a job or a student place. You get your own coach to do this.

The coaching is free of charge for you.

You and your coach can for instance

  • update your resume, that is your CV
  • apply for jobs that are of interest to you
  • practice for a job interview
  • find out how you can start studying.

You can meet your coach for example for five hours per month. You can agree together on a time and place that suits you. You can take your child along to the meetings.

The coaching lasts for six months. The coaching is conducted in Finnish, Swedish, or English.

These are the enterprises conducting the coaching:

How to participate in the coaching

  1. Write down your contact details on this web page: https://asiointi.jotpa.fi/uravalmennus

  2. The coaching company calls you within a few days. The coach gives you information about the coaching and the research study. Together, you fill in a preliminary enquiry and an agreement form, where you agree to participate in the coaching and the research. Filling in the enquiries takes approximately 15 minutes. You receive a gift card of 15 euros in return.

  3. You participate in the following week’s drawing of lots. We draw lots for the mothers, who get to participate in the coaching. Half of the people participating in the drawing of lots are chosen to participate in the coaching.

  4. If your lot is drawn, you get to participate in the coaching. Your coach will then call you and you will agree on your first meeting. Your information is also used for the research study. You can interrupt your participation at any given time.

  5. If you are not chosen for the coaching, the coach will inform you by e-mail. You will still be a part of the control group of the research study. Your information is used in the research study.

The coaching is part of a research study

According to research, mothers have a lower income than others. This research will give new information on how mothers can be better supported in finding employment.

Through this study, we look into how mothers return to work or continue studying after their parental leave. Some mothers participate in the coaching, whilst other mothers do not participate.

We track the mothers’ situation for the duration of ten years from the registers of Statistics Finland. Mothers cannot be identified from the results of the research.

The research study is conducted by Kela and The Labour Institute for Economic Research Labore. The Service Centre for Continuous Learning and Employment, that is SECLE, has given money for conducting the coaching and research.

We will publish the preliminary results of the research in 2027 after the conclusion of the coaching.

You can ask the researchers at Labore for more information.

Welcome aboard!
